Meet the Staff Interview Series – Lord Chaos

Author note: This interview is posted as is by request of Lord Chaos.  It has not been edited and appears in it’s original format.

Moniker used on site?
Lord Chaos

Where did your nickname come from?
Its an ancient gamer nick I used back in the oldest console days (Lamda, Vic-20, ZX-Spectrum, etc.), it used to mean that I was the lord and master of all the chaos of the computer, hence “Lord Chaos”, no relation to later use of the nickname by others or by games. Added to that was my ability to control chaotic situations.

Age?
37

Where are you from?
Denmark

What are your responsibilities with UOForums/EOGamer?
I am the CEO of EOGamer and through that I own UOForums. My responsibilities are varied and range from funding expenses to taking care of all project launched under the EOGamer/UOForums banner.

What did you do prior to EOGamer?
If you mean within the same field, then I was once Managing Editor of Lineage 2 Stratics, their most successful site to date. I was also Development Lead of Stratics for a while up until after the great crash’n’burn of Stratics in 2008 where I left.

What was the driving force behind creating EOGamer?
To create an alternative to existing networks and create a place for the people I knew instead of where they were in a place they were unhappy with. It was also to create a challenge for myself and create a success beyond the physical world.

What are your goals for EOGamer?
To create a diverse gaming network covering many games, from MMOs to console games. Many of the goals have already been reached, like creating a safe, stable and well functioning network…our network has been flattened by hurricane Ike, suffered catastrophic server failures, sysadmin issues and dozens of server moves, with very little downtime and no real loss of data.

We want to reach out to Every Online Gamer (hence EOGamer) and now as something new we have resurrected our old youtube plans, as we recently added a talented youtuber to our family. KrustyVonBach.

We want to continue to expand our plans through more news, covering more games and reviews.

In 2010 we acquired UOForums.com and we’ll continue to expand our Ultima Online support and work to improve that community. This can be seen in many new changes, while trying to keep everything in the spirit of UOForums. Also with our just launched UOGuilds.com, we expand our support of the Ultima Online community.

But first and foremost my goal for the site is that everyone can do what they like and have fun.

What MMOs do you play?
On and off I play Ultima Online (10 accounts, started 1998), Lineage 2 (5 accounts, started april 2004), Rift (1 account) and Star Wars – The Old Republic. (1 account, founder member)

What console/non-MMOs do you play?
I do play a little bit PS3 games, but its very rare. Mostly on the PC I play adventure, action and RTS games, like Dragon Age 1&2, Half Life series, Portal 1&2, Grand Theft Auto IV, Heroes of Might and Magic, King’s Bounty, League of Legends, Magic The Gathering, Star Craft 2, Skyrim and so on.

What is your favorite play style? Why?
Solo PvM. I generally dislike playing against other players and I enjoy taking my time to do things by myself or with someone else if they’re directly playing with me.

Go figure that half the MMOs I play are PvP heavy when I don’t like to PvP.

What is your favorite MMO? Why?
Would have to be Ultima Online. It is the granddaddy of MMOs and has a rich world to live and breathe in. And it doesn’t have level races like other MMOs, which is nice. Not to mention it has housing and so much more, which is why I gladly keep 10 accounts active there.

What’s your favorite console? Why?
Don’t know, don’t have sufficient experience with consoles to really pick a favorite.

What’s your favorite non-MMO game? Why?
Oh there are so many. But if within recent times, then Portal, hands down the most awesome game ever. The sheer fun, puzzles, black humor and awesome storyline makes this simply the best. Portal 2 is even better, but the sheer newness factor of the first Portal experience is second to none. Within the last years’ time I’d have to say skyrim. Even older games I can’t really pick a favorite…maybe the original Bards Tale on the Amiga.

What was the first game you played?
I honestly don’t remember anymore…I believe it might have been Pong on a video console (with that being the only game on it) decades ago.

What is your favorite game genre?
Story engaging FPS or adventure game.

What do you look for in games?
Good storyline, fun gameplay and engaging gameworld.

What is your “claim to fame”?
Most people would likely say I have claims to infamy, not fame, heh.

Hobbies outside of gaming?
Computers and some sports. (though neither really counts as hobbies, I guess I don’t have any :p )

If you were to design your “perfect” MMO, what would it be like?
Ultima Online 2, better, stronger, faster. 🙂

Ultima Online Experiences

When did you start playing Ultima Online?
In 1998.

What is your fondest memory from the game?
Jeez, there are so many many many of them. My bugged über white wyrm, building our first house, the first few moments of entering the world and promptly getting beaten to death by a deer which I thought would be fun to hit, first time sailing on the water in a boat

How long have you played UO?
Nearly 14 years.

What is your main shard you play on and why?
Europa. Because I am from Europe and my then girlfriend selected it.

What’s your favorite character build?
Tamer…no, mage…no, bard…no, crafter, no wait, ABC archer…argh, can’t decide.

Do you have any interesting character names? If so, what are they and how did they come about?
I have a crafter named “Lord Chaos”. Started out in 1998 with the name Chaos and when you could get fame for BODs, I gained the Lord title.

If you could get the devs to change one thing in the game, what would it be?
Add mod support to the legacy client.

Why do you still play this game?
Its unique and compelling.

If you had one piece of advise to offer new players, what would it be?
Go to UOForums.com and UOGuilds.com so you can get friends and a guild to play with. (shameless plug)

Anything else you want to share with us?
All out of things to share. People are welcome to leave questions for future rounds or ask me questions on UOForums. 🙂 I have a personal forum there as well.
