Meet the Staff Interview Series – Nok

I’m going to preface this interview a little bit. I had the wonderful opprotunity to meet Nok at PAX 2009 in Seattle along with Dor of Stratics and a bunch of other folks I had worked with from other sites past and present. Nok will have a different interview in the future regarding the GameXBars and a few other topics, but this topic is just to get to know him better, about what he’s doing wtih UOForums/EOGamer and his experiences in UO. It is a delightful read and I hope you enjoy it as well.

Moniker used on site?
Nok.

Where did your nickname come from?
An old Advanced Dungeons & Dragons character I had back in the 80’s & 90’s while playing with some friends called the ACES.

Age?
51.

Where are you from?
Los Angeles, California.

What did you do prior to joining UOForums?
Same I as do now, browse countless fan sites looking for those have something to offer to the communities they serve.

Why did you join UOForums?
UOF is unique. It has a pretty open, friendly and knowledgeable membership. It is also well managed, moderated and organized.

What are your responsibilities with UOForums/EOGamer?
To help promote the UOForums Partner Site Program… sort of a liaison and sounding board between fan sites in the community.

What are your goals for UOForums/EOGamer?
To see UOF/EOG grow not only in membership, but also a center point in the UO and MMO communities.

What MMOs do you play?
Currently… none.

What console/non-MMOs do you play?
I don’t have a modern console… I’m a pretty dedicated PC gamer. Non-MMO games? Assassin’s Creed, Blur, Civilization V, DiRT, Dragon Age, and a few Facebook puzzle games.

What is your favorite play style? Why?
Usually PvM and RP, I enjoy the camaraderie, and role playing with live players. I love PvP sometimes, but not big on the smack talk and immaturity that unfortunately comes with a few people sometimes.

What is your favorite MMO? Why?
Ultima Online. Notice any hesitation there? UO just has a depth, breadth & freedom that most other MMOs still have yet to match. I do like LOTRO, WAR, and WoW too. Although while playing the beta, SWTOR has gotten me very interested in playing it.

What’s your favorite console? Why?
None. Too proprietary, too over-priced, lacks upgrade-ability and value. The current modern consoles average about 6 years old; and Microsoft, Nintendo & Sony won’t commit to new consoles even being in the design stages… so they release new controllers. A decent PC gaming rig will smoke the current consoles. If I had the money for a console, I would put my money toward a new PC component instead (more faster RAM, a SSD, better video, etc.)

What’s your favorite non-MMO game? Why?
Currently, the Mass Effect 3 demo… makes me break into a sweat. Also anything that runs on my 3 multi-monitor Eyefinity setup.

What was the first game you played?
Did I mention I am 51?! Chutes & Ladders or Operation. Oh, you meant video game… Atari Pong System in 1975.

What is your favorite game genre?
Role playing… the bigger and more epic, the better.

What do you look for in games?
Great story, exploration, surprises, and smart humor. NCSoft’s shuttered F2P (before F2P became popular) game Dungeon Runners is still the funniest game I’ve ever played… the NPC dialog was hilarious with top notch celebrity impersonations (like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sean Connery and others had me falling off my chair).

What is your “claim to fame”?
In gaming? Publisher of GameXbar.

Hobbies outside of gaming?
Cars (’08 G6 GXP & ’67 Camaro RS), film/music/tech buff, outdoors… getting out & off the grid once in a while.

If you were to design your “perfect” MMO, what would it be like?
I don’t believe there is that much storage on the Internet to answer that. Ack! *gag-cough-choke* Okay, okay… you can stop throttling my neck now Kayhynn! Kingdoms Of Amalar: Reckoning-looking, a World of Warcraft-sized population using a GameXbar, the Star Wars: The Old Republic community team, a dev team headhunted from Bethesda, BioWare, Blizzard, CCP, Codemasters and others… all focused on a Ultima Online 2. Yup, total fantasy.

Anything else you want to share with us?
Tacos anyone?

For those of you that still play/played UO, please answer these as well:

When did you start playing Ultima Online?
March of 1998. I bought UO when it launched, but I didn’t sign up because the idea of paying a subscription to play a game was new. But by March some local friends talked me into it… I was hooked.

What is your fondest memory from the game? (this can be a guild event, EM event, something unique that happened, whatever is something you still remember to this day)?
Told this story many times, but here it goes. Those same friends that got me playing UO took me to the guild house in Southern Yew to help me train Nok as a swordsman. So there I am swinging away on a bear while they kept me healed up. The battle is epic, swinging, parrying, swinging, the running, the screaming like a girl, trying not to panic… I finally almost had the bear’s health down to it’s last few points, but so was I. I knew I had it, just a few more swings. Next thing you know… they heal the bear (you could do that at one time), I died, and they busted up laughing. Evil dawgs, they totally set me up for it.

How long have you played UO?
14 years… until just recently.

What is your main shard you play on and why?
Baja… from beginning to end. It was the shard I started on and developed some great friendships.

What’s your favorite character build?
Kind of a tie between my warrior, and my mage/fisher.

Do you have any interesting character names? If so, what are they and how did they come about?
Pershing, named after one of my grandfathers… an old family name.

If you could get the devs to change one thing in the game, what would it be?
In the actual game? The guild system need modernizing. Outside but for the game? The community program.

Why do you still play this game?
Unfortunately I don’t. I recently closed my accounts.

If you had one piece of advise to offer new players, what would it be?
If you’ve played other MMOs, leave your expectations at the door. If you’ve never played a MMO before… ask, create, do, explore, fail, mine, swing, tame, let your imagination carry you away in the multiverse that is Ultima. Outside the game, explore the community fan sites… if you ask for it, the community will help. UO players are as dedicated as the game is big, they are the game’s best resource.

Meet the Staff Interview Series – Kattster

This interview introduces folks to Kattster, one of our Lineage 2 Quest Guide writers as well as having contributed to some of the fan fiction for Lineage 2. Learn more about her below.

Moniker used on site?
Kattster

Where did your nickname come from?
I started playing Lineage 2 with the nick Katone (I typed in random letters). I was in Oren one day, and I saw a human female archer, and said, “I want an orange character.”  I made Kattster, she became my main and I’ve used the alias ever since.

Age?
Undisclosed.

Where are you from?
Wisconsin, United States

What did you do prior to joining EOGamer?
Freelance work mostly, requests for GIMP images as well.

Why did you join EOGamer?
I saw that they were looking for more staff, and it was really something I wanted to try. It just kind of felt right to me.

What do/did you do for EOGamer?
I did a lot of quest guides. I would still like to do more, but with schooling taking up my time, and not being able to log into Lineage 2 because of server traffic, it’s not looking so great.

What MMOs do you play?

  • Lineage 2
  • Guild Wars
  • WoW when they hand out free time
  • At one point I did play Forsaken World, but got bored with it around level 34.

What console/non-MMOs do you play?
None

What is your favorite play style? Why?
I enjoy RPGs the most. I like story lines and advancing, but I also like how interactive it is.

What is your favorite MMO? Why?
Probably Lineage 2. I made plenty of friends on L2, I don’t mind the grind and it helps me escape.

What is your favorite console? Why?
None. I don’t currently own any.

What is your favorite non-MMO game? Why?
Skyrim

What was the first game you played?
Guild Wars, back when it first came out.

What is your favorite game genre?
Fantasy

What do you look for in games?
A good story line, good mechanics, good texturing, and no cheesy scripting.

What is your “claim to fame”?
I got an offer to sell my artwork online from a contractor. Unfortunately, I was eight. My mother had to turn down the offer.

Hobbies outside of gaming?
Painting, drawing, sketching, acting, singing, playing trumpet and french horn, studying English, photoshopping, playing Sims 3, and writing.

If you were to design your “perfect” MMO, what would it be like?
It’s actually really funny that this is a question. I actually am looking at building a game, because I have a pretty good idea for it.
Five main races to represent the five elements, earth, fire, water, air, and Spirit. Well, actually it’s six main races. For Spirit there are two: Geist and Alp. The Geist is a more advanced being on the “good” side, and the Alp is just a resurrected Geist, therefore “bad.”
The extra races are human, elf, and most likely dwarves, with selectable affinities.
I don’t want to give too much away.

Anything else you want to share with us?
I think I just about covered it.

When did you start playing Lineage 2?
I started in C1, but became bored with it as I was young and it took a month to get to level 20. I then came back to it in December of 2008, and have been playing a little over three years.

What is your fondest memory from the game? (this can be a clan event, GM/Server event, something unique that happened, whatever is something you still remember to this day)?
Honestly, so much has happened for me in Lineage 2, that I really can’t recount anything particularly special. Nothing stands out to me, because everything was on equal levels of amazing-ness.

How long have you played Lineage 2?
Three years, and counting.

What is the main server you play on and why?
Chronos. I started on Bartz and with the server merges, I ended up on Chronos. I’m actually kind of ticked that they named the newbie server Bartz.

What’s your favorite character class?
It’s a tie between Duelist and Eva’s Saint. My main duelist is subbed Eva’s Saint, and I’m in love with both.

Do you have any interesting character names? If so, what are they and how did they come about?

  • Pandimonica + MechaPanda – I just like pandas
  • Katone + Kattster
  • Katsa – The name of the main character in a story I read once
  • Aemik – Sometimes I just throw random letters together

If you could get the devs to change one thing in the game, what would it be?
Ban the newbs.

Why do you still play this game?
I don’t think I could go without talking to my buddies once in a while, I would feel bad if I just left them behind. That, and I have a Wizard Hat.

If you had one piece of advise to offer new players, what would it be?
Quit, it’ll stop the lag. Just kidding. I would say that you shouldn’t start asking questions right away. Coax yourself into the game, and learn through experience.

Meet the Staff Interview Series – Rupert Avery

Moniker used on site?
Rupert Avery

Where did your nickname come from?
A series of books by Raymond E. Feist.

Age?
26

Where are you from?
Scotland

What did you do prior to joining UOForums?
I was a trader in UO.

Why did you join UOForums?
I wanted to learn about how to run forums and the site as a whole while helping the community.

What are your responsibilities with UOForums/EOGamer?
I am a recently promoted administrator of UOForums. I was previously a junior admin, which basically means I was learning the ropes. I do the Establishment of the Week interviews & I run Ultima Auctions. I also helped create UOGuilds.

What are your goals for UOForums/EOGamer?
To see the sites grow, create new and innovative tools for the Ultima Online Community which could also be used in some of the other games UOForums/EOGamer covers.

What MMOs do you play?
Ultima Online is the only one I actually play, I have tried others though.

What console/non-MMOs do you play?
XBOX 360 for the win! I play pretty much anything that isn’t sports or driving games, but I prefer RTS, RPG & FPS.

What is your favorite play style? Why?
I like the idea of being a trader in UO as it’s something that uses no in-game skills but is still an art.

What is your favorite MMO? Why?
Ultima Online because it is so vast and varied; it is what you make it.

What’s your favorite console? Why?
Xbox 360 because it has a vast number of games and not too expensive. We have a Wii in the house as well.

What’s your favorite non-MMO game? Why?
I have had many. My favourite right now is between Assasin’s Creed or Shogan 2: Total War.

What was the first game you played?
It was a game on the Sega Master system 2 when I was in hospital getting a heart operation at the tender age of 5.. the game was Operation Wolf and used a gun 🙂

What is your favorite game genre?
Real time strategies.

What do you look for in games?
Longevity, either single player or multi player.

What is your “claim to fame”?
I don’t know if I have one.. I am known in my work as being cheeky… in a good way!

Hobbies outside of gaming?
My 3 kids take up my time 🙂

If you were to design your “perfect” MMO, what would it be like?
It would be like UO…

Anything else you want to share with us?
I like Blackberry Mobile Phones!

When did you start playing Ultima Online?
I had my first account when I was 13, back around 1999/2000 when we had a 56k modem and my mum paid for it. Sadly I don’t have that account anymore. I stopped playing until about 2002 and its been on and off since then. I have paid for 6 years worth since August 2002 according to the account age.

What is your fondest memory from the game? (this can be a guild event, EM event, something unique that happened, whatever is something you still remember to this day)?
A long time ago, before Tram, I was in a guild that set up guild battles in T2A. There was a big open field and 2 or 3 guilds would swap members and we would put on different coloured robes and just battle it out. Also, we would do king of the hill etc. It was a good laugh. 🙂 I think the guild abbreviation was BDA. Other than that, when I finally worked my way up to owning a Luna house. I started out from Moonglow under the name Kinglsey and the shop Flourish & Blotts.

How long have you played UO?
On and off for 12 years, but had some rather large breaks and new accounts. My oldest account is 6 years.

What is your main shard you play on and why?
Europa because I am from Scotland and the time zone makes more sense. However I do trades on all shards.

What’s your favorite character build?
I like roleplaying characters that are what they are supposed to be.

Do you have any interesting character names? If so, what are they and how did they come about?
I had one on my very first account named Koranian. A friend of mine said it, so it stuck. He was a mage.

If you could get the devs to change one thing in the game, what would it be?
More help for newbies to keep them around.

Why do you still play this game?
I love it!

If you had one piece of advise to offer new players, what would it be?
Stick with it. You need to make your game in UO. It wont play for you.

Meet the Staff Interview Series – Belanos

Moniker used on site?
Belanos

Where did your nickname come from?
It’s the name of a Celtic sun god. I was trying to come up with a name for my first UO character and this popped into my mind.

Age?
Just 24…

Where are you from?
All over, but currently living in Fort Bragg, NC, United States

What did you do prior to joining UOForums?
Lurked and leeched!

Why did you join UOForums?
I don’t really remember. I think there was some thread that I wanted to reply to, so I registered.

What are your responsibilities with UOForums/EOGamer?
To make the site a better place to digitally live 😛

What are your goals for UOForums/EOGamer?
To help keep things going well enough that EA will realize that there isn’t only one fansite.

What MMOs do you play?
UO is the only one I play right now. EVE and EQ in the past.

What console/non-MMOs do you play?
I am a huge fan of the FFX and earlier Final Fantasy games. Post FFX it all kinda went downhill IMO. Also, I’ll admit that I’m a big Pokemon fan. The first two generations were the only ones that were really good IMO (that includes the later remakes). Also into Call of Duty on PS3 – annoying games but fun multiplayer.

What is your favorite play style?  Why?
Casual RP and PVM. I don’t have the attention span to sit in PVP for hours on end.

What is your favorite MMO?  Why?
UO of course! EVE comes close, but it doesn’t offer the same depth that UO does. I just like how open UO is.

What’s your favorite console?  Why?
Of all the consoles ever, I’d have to say either the SNES or PSX. But with emulation and backwards compatibility and such, I’m going to go with the PS3.

What’s your favorite non-MMO game?  Why?
Difficult to say, but I’d have to go with Final Fantasy 7. I played it way back in 1997 when it first came out in the US, and it was my introduction to real RPG gaming. I still own my original white label copy, and I still play it. That game had an influence on me and my future as a gamer that I couldn’t begin to describe. I consider myself the Internets’ foremost expert on Final Fantasy VII 🙂

What was the first game you played?
Super Mario Brothers/Duck Hunt on the SNES, when I was in Kindergarten.

What is your favorite game genre?
RPG without a doubt

What do you look for in games?
Solid story is the most important. I like lots of side-quests. I don’t like when games try to reinvent the wheel with the game mechanics.

What is your “claim to fame”?
On Chesapeake I once found a way into the blocked off area where Casca was about to give a speech, and when he showed up I declared that I had usurped the throne 🙂

Hobbies outside of gaming?
Warhammer Fantasy Battle. HUGE fan. Also a computer enthusiast and hobbyist Python programmer.

If you were to design your “perfect” MMO, what would it be like?
UO in space.

Anything else you want to share with us?
I’m terrified of spiders.

When did you start playing Ultima Online?
1998, on my brother’s account. A few months later I got my own account.

What is your fondest memory from the game?  (this can be a guild event, EM event, something unique that happened, whatever is something you still remember to this day)?
For a few months I ran an RP tavern in East Paxlair. Me and a buddy were the only ones there one time when I had to page a GM to fix something. We were sitting around when GM Sorif revealed himself and chatted us up a bit. He fixed my problem, and I offered him a job as a bar wench. His reply was to pop behind the bar and say “One bourbon, one scotch, and one beer.” Fun times!

How long have you played UO?
First started almost 13 years ago but I’ve played on and off for the last several years. My oldest account is credited for just over 11 years right now.

What is your main shard you play on and why?
Chesapeake, because my brothers both played there when I first started, and I never left.

What’s your favorite character build?
I like pure paladins the most (120 each in weapon skill, tactics, anatomy, healing, chivalry, parry). Lots of fun to play.

Do you have any interesting character names?  If so, what are they and how did they come about?
Not really. Most of my character names are either borrowed from mythology, classic scifi, or Lovecraft.

If you could get the devs to change one thing in the game, what would it be?
Rideable dolphins.

Why do you still play this game?
I have no idea. I keep quitting and the game keeps calling me back.

If you had one piece of advise to offer new players, what would it be?
People are all idiots. Play the game the way you want to.

Meet the Staff Interview Series – Silverfoot

Moniker used on site?
Silverfoot

Where did your nickname come from?
Part of my usual gamer name Se’an Silverfoot, Se’an is my RL middle name and my son’s name. Silverfoot was my attempt at an RP last name

Age?
58

Where are you from?
Hudson Valley area of New York

What did you do prior to joining UOForums?
I was a forum MOD on Ianstorm and the MYUO forums.

Why did you join UOForums?
Both Ianstorm and MYUO ended, in different fashions, and UOForums seemed like a good place to get UO info and keep in touch with players. I wasn’t a fan of confrontational sites; get enough of that in RL.

What are your responsibilities with UOForums/EOGamer?
As of now, I’m the lead administrator of UOForums..

What are your goals for UOForums/EOGamer?
To continue the growth of our site in all aspects of gaming, while maintaining a friendly user atmosphere.

What MMOs do you play?
Ultima Online & Lord of The Rings Online

What console/non-MMOs do you play?
I do a little XBox COD, but the old thumbs can’t handle it too much anymore *chuckles*

What is your favorite play style?
Honestly I don’t think I have one overall style, I do what I think is fun at the time: RP, PvE, PvP.
Why?
I play games to have fun and relieve stress, really simple as that.

What is your favorite MMO?
UO & LOTRO…can we say tie?
Why?
They both provide me with different gaming experiences I like the sandbox freedom that UO gives me. I also can’t get enough of running around in Middle Earth, I started reading Tolkien about 1964 and it’s always been a part of me. Hell I have Gandalf tattooed to my calf!

What’s your favorite console?
XBox
Why?
Basically it’s what we have in the house, what my son & son-in-law play. Again, I don’t play a lot of it, I’ve broken my fingers so many times hand held controls and I don’t get along to well.

What’s your favorite non-MMO game?
Action Sports Football or baseball sims
Why?
I’ve been in sports sims games since 1973, I’m a huge American football & baseball fan. I belong to one baseball league and we get together every year in Pennsylvania for the last 25 years, and of the 24 guys, I’d say about 18 are original members.

What was the first game you played?
I’d say Monopoly….lol. First computer game would be Astroids.

What is your favorite game genre?
Fantasy, then sci/fi.

What do you look for in games?
Hard to explain, but …fun. I don’t want to be guided every where, I don’t want to constantly level or be forced to play a certain way.

What is your “claim to fame”?
I’m not even sure I know how to answer that *chuckles*, I make a great Irish soda bread !!

Hobbies outside of gaming?
Reading, music, it’s about all the time I have after family and work.

If you were to design your “perfect” MMO, what would it be like?
I don’t think you can have a “perfect” MMO, too many folks with so many likes and dislikes. UO gives me all I need in an MMO and it’s why I still play since beta back in ’97. It covers every base, crafter, PvP, PvE. Archery, magery, swords. Even High Sea adventure!

For those of you that still play/played UO, please answer these as well:
When did you start playing Ultima Online?
Beta – late August 1997.

What is your fondest memory from the game? (this can be a guild event, EM event, something unique that happened, whatever is something you still remember to this day)?
Geez, there are a lot of good one’s. First time logging in and getting killed by chickens with me RL brothers, having members of our guild over the house for a weekend of beer, bbq & gaming, meetups where I finally got to meet others I’ve played alongside for a number of years.

How long have you played UO?
No breaks since it started.

What is your main shard you play on and why?
Chesapeake, been playing here since the shard first opened, I also have had a character and been involved on the Siege Perilous shard. I like the history involved with Ches and look forward to helping others keep that history going, hell can you imagine 25 years of gaming history on a shard, would be awesome!

What’s your favorite character build?
Se’an my archer, he’s just homegrown and developed his skills over the years by what he used, not by what some template decided he needed. To say he dies a lot, would be correct. But I enjoy playing him this way.

Do you have any interesting character names?
Not really, hell I named one of my crafters LAMETH, because I couldn’t come up with a name and I thought, at the time, having a mule crafter was, well lame.

Why do you still play this game?
I still have fun, pure and simple. I do keep gaming in it’s rightful place in my life, so it’s not overindulgence.

If you had one piece of advise to offer new players, what would it be?
To not try to understand everything when you start, there’s just too much. Decide what you want your first character to be, then build him/her. After that you can slowly add to your knowledge of the game. There is just so much to learn it can be truly overwhelming. They also need to come in knowing this game doesn’t hold your hand, it’s the price you pay to have the freedom to be what you want to be. IMHO
